Safe Exercises for Bedridden Patients

Bedridden patients may have limited mobility but that does not mean they cannot do some exercises for their wellbeing. Staying in a position for a long time can damage areas of the skin. Pressure sores are common to bedridden patients because of the absence of movement. This can lead to extreme discomfort.

Without getting up, the patient together with an attendant can perform the following exercises:

  • Palm Stretches
    A simple exercise, palm stretching builds the patient’s tolerance to movement. Start by getting the hand towards the body and extend the fingers with an open palm. Touch each finger using the thumb.
  • Arm Lifts
    When possible, the patient can perform the arm lift himself. A loved one or a caregiver from Long term care in Saint Paul, Minnesota can also help out. Lift the arm as high as possible and hold out for ten seconds. This can be alternated with each arm, or done with both.
  • Leg Lifts
    Similar to arm lifts, try lifting the leg as carefully as possible. Then hold out for about ten seconds. Slowly, bring the leg down. Repeat the exercise with the other leg several times a day.
